What is KHDA?
The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) is Dubai's education regulator. Every private school in Dubai undergoes annual inspection by KHDA, receiving a rating that reflects its overall quality. Understanding these ratings helps you make informed school choices.
However, KHDA ratings aren't everything. A "Very Good" school might be a better fit for your child than an "Outstanding" one, depending on their needs, the school's culture, and your family's priorities.
KHDA Rating Categories
Outstanding
The highest rating, awarded to schools that demonstrate exceptional quality across all areas. Outstanding schools show consistent excellence in teaching, learning, leadership, and student outcomes. They're often among the most competitive for admissions.
Very Good
Schools demonstrating high quality with many excellent features. Very Good schools provide strong education with some areas for continued development. Many families choose Very Good schools for their excellent quality and slightly less competitive admissions.
Good
Schools meeting the expected standards with some notable strengths. Good schools provide solid education and are often working towards higher ratings. They can represent excellent value for money.
Acceptable
Schools meeting minimum standards but with significant areas for improvement. KHDA works closely with these schools to raise quality.
Weak
Schools requiring significant improvement. KHDA monitors these closely and they must demonstrate progress.
What KHDA Inspects
KHDA inspectors assess schools across several key areas:
- Quality of students' achievement - Academic progress, learning skills, personal and social development
- Quality of teaching and assessment - Teaching methods, use of assessment, meeting individual needs
- Quality of curriculum - Coverage, relevance, enrichment opportunities
- Quality of protection and support - Safeguarding, wellbeing, pastoral care
- Leadership and management - Vision, governance, self-evaluation, community engagement
How to Use KHDA Ratings
Start with Ratings, But Look Deeper
KHDA ratings provide a useful starting point for shortlisting schools. However, read the full inspection reports for detailed insights into specific areas of strength and development.
Consider Your Child's Needs
A smaller "Good" school might suit a child who needs individual attention better than a large "Outstanding" school. Consider what environment will help your child thrive.
Look at Trends
Schools improving year-on-year show positive direction. Some "Very Good" schools are on track to Outstanding. Look at inspection history, not just the current rating.
Visit and Ask Questions
Nothing replaces seeing a school in person. Visit during a normal school day if possible. Ask about areas highlighted in inspection reports.

Dubai has many Outstanding-rated schools across different curricula and price points:

Value Outstanding Schools
